OPHTHALMIC/OCULAR MIGRAINE
There are several different types of migraines. Classic migraines are preceded by an aura, sometimes visual or auditory, followed by a headache. Headaches are often associated with nausea and can be triggered by certain smells or foods. Retinal migraines are thought to occur for the same reasons as do classic migraines. There is usually a family history of migraines. Episodes of fluttering light in the peripheral vision, blurriness extending to the center of vision, and difficulty focusing are hallmarks of retinal migraines. These episodes typically last 10-20 minutes without headache. Migraines become less common with age. It is important to rule out other causes of headaches that could be caused by a neurologic disorder.
